Eligible dental students must be currently enrolled in an ADA-Accredited Dental School which is among those affiliated with Lutheran Medical Center. All participating schools maintain high academic standards and have externship programs designed to give students the best hands-on patient care experience.
Most externships require that students be in their junior or senior year of dental school in order to apply. Externships are 1-4 weeks in length. Externs will be able to assist oral and maxillofacial residents with surgery and other procedures as well as attend conferences, seminars and other training opportunities.
Externs will work with experienced veterinarians and receive supervision as well as training and hands-on experience. Students interested in applying for the program must be in good standing on their clinical rotations. Externs must be sponsored by a NJVMA member veterinarian.
The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.
Students attending the Star Career Academy are required to complete an externship before graduating. They may choose from many exciting venues such as restaurants, catering services, hotels, corporate dining rooms, country clubs, bake shops, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and conference centers.
