The 10-week externship program runs from mid-May through mid-August every year. Externs work 8- or 12-hour shifts with pay; some shifts will be day-night and rotations may include occasional weekend shifts. Nursing students learn through observation, clinical practice and classroom experience.
Eligible dental students must be currently enrolled in an ADA-Accredited Dental School which is among those affiliated with Lutheran Medical Center. All participating schools maintain high academic standards and have externship programs designed to give students the best hands-on patient care experience.
The externship is a 10-week work program that gives nursing students practical experience in a hospital environment. Externs will receive general, clinical, computer and new nurse orientation followed by work shadowing and other opportunities that will enhance their classroom learning and teach them valuable new skills.
The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.
Veterinary students interested in gaining first-hand experience in shelter medicine are encouraged to apply. By observing experienced shelter veterinarians, students will gain valuable clinical experience and exposure to career options in shelter veterinarian medical practice.
