Gwinnett Medical Center Nurse Extern Program is available to nursing students enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Candidates must be in good academic standing and be in their last year of nursing school.

Externs will gain valuable clinical knowledge and skills through the summer externship and receive experience in Oncology, Medical, Surgical, Cardiac, Orthopedic/Surgical Specialties, Emergency Services, Neuroscience and Spine, ICU, Labor & Delivery, Mother/Infant, NICU, High Risk Pregnancy Unit, Surgical Services, and Nursing Imaging.

The externship offers nursing students an opportunity to prepare for a career in nursing. Externships are offered at all three Gwinnet Medical Center locations.

Gwinnett Medical Center is a 553-bed, not-for-profit health care network that provides many high-quality services at their facilities in Lawrenceville, Duluth, Hamilton Mill, Johns Creek and the metro Atlanta area. They are ranked in the top 5 percent in the nation for clinical quality.

St. Jude’s Nurse Extern Program is designed to give nursing students work experience in pediatric oncology nursing. Nursing school students who are within 12 months of graduation may apply. The length of the externship varies. Students who are entering their senior year of nursing school may apply. The internship is paid; housing is not included. Applications are available every year in the months of March, April, October and November.

Bain & Company offers students who have graduated from college a unique career in corporate strategy consulting. Students who join the Bain team are offered externship positions that allow them to jump start their career through six-month working assignments at other companies where they can pursue different career paths. As Associate Consultants and Senior Associate Consultants, team members have an opportunity to broaden their consulting knowledge at consumer product companies, international think tanks, nonprofit charter schools, startup companies, and others. Following a six-month externship, consultants return to Bain with increased skills as a consultant and enhanced knowledge of other industries.

The externship is unpaid. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. Cook Children's Nursing Externship Program is a 10-week work experience program for nursing students pursuing careers in pediatrics. The externship includes clinical experience and classroom activities that will increase both knowledge and skills in nursing. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a BSN program. A grade point average of 3.0 or above is required; students also must have completed two clinical courses before applying. Externships take place during the summer from the middle of May through the end of June.

Summer Student Nurse Tech Program is open to nursing students throughout the U.S. The paid work experience program takes place during the summer and gives nursing students an opportunity to gain skills that will be valuable to their nursing career. The program is held every summer at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. The program lasts 10 weeks during which students will be trained for a career as a Nurse Tech. Every year about 50 nursing students from around the country are accepted into the program which includes educational sessions from all areas of specialty.
