They will assist in dental procedures and be supervised by experienced dentists and hygienists. Indian Health Service Extern Program offers American Indian or Alaska Native students in the health field a chance to use their skills and discover career opportunities as an Indian health professional. This is a paid externship for health profession students. Eligible fields of study include nursing, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, psychology, optometry, physical therapy, medical technology and social work. Eligibility includes students who are recipients of scholarships in the health profession, American Indian or Alaska Native students studying in the health field, or Non-American Indian/Alaska Native students in a health profession.
