Indian Health Service Extern Program offers American Indian or Alaska Native students in the health field a chance to use their skills and discover career opportunities as an Indian health professional. This is a paid externship for health profession students. Eligible fields of study include nursing, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, psychology, optometry, physical therapy, medical technology and social work. Eligibility includes students who are recipients of scholarships in the health profession, American Indian or Alaska Native students studying in the health field, or Non-American Indian/Alaska Native students in a health profession.

Association of Shelter Veterinarians Externships offer veterinary students an opportunity to find out more about practicing veterinary medicine in a shelter environment. Opportunities are available throughout the U.S. and Canada. Veterinary students interested in gaining first-hand experience in shelter medicine are encouraged to apply. St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program

St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program is for nursing students who are just two semesters away from graduation. Senior-level nursing students may apply. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. The externship places nursing students in real work environments where they can apply their classroom learning in a hospital setting working with real patients.
