Memphis Choices Medical Externship offers externships to Medical Assistant Students. It is open to students whose career plans are to provide basic medical support to lab techs, nurse practitioners, and doctors. This externship will remain open until it is filled. The amount of time externs must devote to the position is based on education program requirements. Memphis Choices also has a paid opening for a Full time Medical Assistant. Work will include working with medical and administrative personnel, reviewing charts, drawing blood, giving injections, prepping exam rooms, assisting in office procedures, and interacting with patients.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship Opportunities are available to dental students to help prepare them for careers as dental surgeons. Students must be currently attending accredited dental schools in the U.S. Most externships require that students be in their junior or senior year of dental school in order to apply. Externships are 1-4 weeks in length. Externs will be able to assist oral and maxillofacial residents with surgery and other procedures as well as attend conferences, seminars and other training opportunities.

Indian Health Service Extern Program offers American Indian or Alaska Native students in the health field a chance to use their skills and discover career opportunities as an Indian health professional. This is a paid externship for health profession students. Eligible fields of study include nursing, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, psychology, optometry, physical therapy, medical technology and social work. Eligibility includes students who are recipients of scholarships in the health profession, American Indian or Alaska Native students studying in the health field, or Non-American Indian/Alaska Native students in a health profession.

St. Jude’s Nurse Extern Program

St. Jude’s Nurse Extern Program is designed to give nursing students work experience in pediatric oncology nursing. Nursing school students who are within 12 months of graduation may apply. The length of the externship varies. Students who are entering their senior year of nursing school may apply. The internship is paid; housing is not included. Applications are available every year in the months of March, April, October and November.
