UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program offers work experience to nursing students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of nursing school. The externship is unpaid. Externships are offered during the summer and take place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

Johns Hopkins Clinical Nurse Externships

Johns Hopkins Clinical Nurse Externships are offered to nursing students who have completed at least one clinical practicum in an acute-care hospital. The externship includes pay and an opportunity to gain more hands-on experience in performing patient care duties. Applicants must be willing to work at least one shift a week during the school semester. To be eligible to apply, nursing students must have completed their nursing school course work as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing and obtain their CNA certification two weeks prior to the start of the externship.
