Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) offers an unpaid Veterinary Technician/Nurse Student Externship Program for students enrolled in AVMA accredited veterinary technology/nursing programs. The program provides hands-on emergency medicine experience, including patient care, laboratory work, and triage in a fast-paced environment. Externs receive mentorship from credentialed veterinary nurses and can customize the externship length and location to meet academic requirements. Rabies vaccination is mandatory unless exempted by the school's policy. The opportunity is exclusive to vet tech/nursing students, not for veterinary or veterinary assistant students.

It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

Training external to the classroom is available through the unpaid externship program that allows students to work in various work environments. Students accepted into the externship program may choose to work for the federal government, on the Hill, in judicial chambers, or in local or national non-profit agencies.
