Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) offers an unpaid Veterinary Technician/Nurse Student Externship Program for students enrolled in AVMA accredited or seeking accreditation vet tech/nursing programs. The program focuses on emergency medicine skills, including patient vitals, lab sample processing, and triage. Externs are mentored by credentialed veterinary technicians and can choose the externship's length and location. Eligibility requires enrollment in a relevant program, with the externship beginning within 6 months of application. Rabies vaccination is mandatory unless exempted by the school's policy.

The externships give nursing students an opportunity to work directly with the nursing team at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. This paid externship is offered during the summer.
