MIT Student/Alumni Externship Program and Jobs
College students enrolled at MIT have an opportunity to explore their career and gain experience in their field through the Student/Alumni Externship Program. Externship positions are available in several states and internationally.

Every year during MIT's Independent Activities Period in January, students may apply for an externship at an alumni's place of business. The externship may last anywhere from one to four weeks. Over 300 undergraduate and graduate students participate in externships every year. The externships can take place at companies, start-ups, labs, and universities across the U.S. and international locations.

Externships are unpaid but offer much for students to gain in hands-on experience in a real work environment. In addition, externships lead to opportunities for summer internships, full-time employment, and important networking.

All students may begin the application process starting in September and locate externship positions through the Alumni Association's web site. Alumni will then match students with positions that fit within their field of interest. Students will be notified in November of matches.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Summer Student Nurse Tech Program

Summer Student Nurse Tech Program is open to nursing students throughout the U.S. The paid work experience program takes place during the summer and gives nursing students an opportunity to gain skills that will be valuable to their nursing career. The program is held every summer at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. The program lasts 10 weeks during which students will be trained for a career as a Nurse Tech. Every year about 50 nursing students from around the country are accepted into the program which includes educational sessions from all areas of specialty.

UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program

UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program offers work experience to nursing students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of nursing school. The externship is unpaid. Externships are offered during the summer and take place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. Applicants can choose two specialty areas for their externship. The externship is designed to help nursing students choose a career path in nursing.

St. Jude’s Nurse Extern Program is designed to give nursing students work experience in pediatric oncology nursing. Nursing school students who are within 12 months of graduation may apply. The length of the externship varies. Students who are entering their senior year of nursing school may apply. The internship is paid; housing is not included. Applications are available every year in the months of March, April, October and November.

Foreign Medical Graduate U.S. Externships

Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

Bain & Company Externships

Bain & Company offers students who have graduated from college a unique career in corporate strategy consulting. Students who join the Bain team are offered externship positions that allow them to jump start their career through six-month working assignments at other companies where they can pursue different career paths. As Associate Consultants and Senior Associate Consultants, team members have an opportunity to broaden their consulting knowledge at consumer product companies, international think tanks, nonprofit charter schools, startup companies, and others. Following a six-month externship, consultants return to Bain with increased skills as a consultant and enhanced knowledge of other industries.

St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program is for nursing students who are just two semesters away from graduation. Senior-level nursing students may apply. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. The externship places nursing students in real work environments where they can apply their classroom learning in a hospital setting working with real patients.

Christiana Care Health System Student Nurse Externships

Christiana Care Health System Student Nurse Externships are offered to students enrolled in a nursing program and pursuing a career as a Registered Nurse. Students interested in applying must have completed at least one clinical rotation in an acute care setting. Student Nurse Externs work 16 hours bi-weekly and must also be available to work different shifts, holidays and weekends if necessary. The work environment is casual and the work schedules are flexible so students can continue uninterrupted with their studies.

Mayo Clinic Summer III Nursing Externship is open to nursing students every summer at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota. Students who are at the Junior level in school may apply.  Externs work with clinical coaches as well as RNs in a variety of clinical settings, including working on trauma patients and performing CPR. They are exposed to challenging yet rewarding environments and experiences.
