Association of Shelter Veterinarians Externships

Association of Shelter Veterinarians Externships offer veterinary students an opportunity to find out more about practicing veterinary medicine in a shelter environment. Opportunities are available throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Veterinary students interested in gaining first-hand experience in shelter medicine are encouraged to apply. By observing experienced shelter veterinarians, students will gain valuable clinical experience and exposure to career options in shelter veterinarian medical practice.

Requirements vary according to the position. Students who will be assisting with surgery may be required to be in their fourth year of school and have completed surgery labs. Animals may range from small pets and mammals to large barn animals.

Why not apply for an externship and internship?

The externship program is offered by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) headquartered in Corning, New York. The organization has over 750 members who are veterinarians helping animals at shelters around the world. The externship is offered to encourage more students to consider careers as veterinarians in the shelter environment.
