Indian Health Service Extern Program
Indian Health Service Extern Program offers American Indian or Alaska Native students in the health field a chance to use their skills and discover career opportunities as an Indian health professional. This is a paid externship for health profession students.

Eligible fields of study include nursing, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, psychology, optometry, physical therapy, medical technology and social work. Eligibility includes students who are recipients of scholarships in the health profession, American Indian or Alaska Native students studying in the health field, or Non-American Indian/Alaska Native students in a health profession.

Applicants must be enrolled in a health profession program and working towards a degree. They must have a grade point average of 2.0 or above. Externs will be assigned to an IHS healthcare clinic or other health program. They will receive hands-on experience in their field of study. The externships are offered in the summer and winter.

The IHS is a federal health program for American Indians and Alaska Natives. The IHS provides educational opportunities for qualifying students in health profession fields. It also works to improve the health of American Indians and Alaska Natives through health facilities and programs operated by Tribal and Urban health care professionals.
