Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan Student Observers and Externs program is open to students enrolled in an accredited school with a signed medical major. It is a summer externship of job shadowing opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in the medical field.

Applicants must be at least a sophomore or in their final stages of completion/graduating. Summer externships are available in the areas of: •Physical Therapy •Occupational Therapy •Athletic Training •Medical Assisting •Check-in/out •Billing/Coding •Human Resources •Information Technology •Pre-arrival Intake.

To apply, eligible students must complete an application and include a resume and cover letter describing their field of interest. Externship positions are available at various Orthopaedic Associates offices.

Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan provides orthopedic services to patients throughout Grand Rapids and across Michigan. They provide total orthopedic care, from diagnosis, to surgical and nonsurgical intervention, to rehabilitation therapy and wellness. They are staffed by more than 30 highly skilled orthopedic surgeons.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Externships

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Externships are for nursing students currently enrolled in a BSN program. Externships give students a chance to increase their skill set and prepare for a career in nursing. Externs will work in one of the world’s largest academic medical centers. They will work with physicians, allied professionals and other nurses in an environment where they can exchange ideas and increase their medical knowledge. Positions are offered as a Nursing Attendant, Nursing Companion or Summer Nurse Externship. All are part-time nursing positions for nursing students.

UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program offers work experience to nursing students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of nursing school. The externship is unpaid. Externships are offered during the summer and take place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. Applicants can choose two specialty areas for their externship. The externship is designed to help nursing students choose a career path in nursing.

Mayo Clinic Externships are available to current college students as well as recent graduates who want an opportunity to gain more experience in a health care environment. Externships are offered within several different disciplines. Whether students are looking for experience in the field of medicine, providing software and technology support, or developing health and other programs for the clinic, they are sure to find an experience that will enrich their classroom learning.

St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program is for nursing students who are just two semesters away from graduation. Senior-level nursing students may apply. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. The externship places nursing students in real work environments where they can apply their classroom learning in a hospital setting working with real patients.

Externships are a great way for law students at Georgetown University to experience working in law within the public sector. Training external to the classroom is available through the unpaid externship program that allows students to work in various work environments. Students accepted into the externship program may choose to work for the federal government, on the Hill, in judicial chambers, or in local or national non-profit agencies.
