Mayo Clinic Externships are available to current college students as well as recent graduates who want an opportunity to gain more experience in a health care environment. Externships are offered within several different disciplines. Whether students are looking for experience in the field of medicine, providing software and technology support, or developing health and other programs for the clinic, they are sure to find an experience that will enrich their classroom learning.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Externships are for nursing students currently enrolled in a BSN program. Externships give students a chance to increase their skill set and prepare for a career in nursing. Externs will work in one of the world’s largest academic medical centers. They will work with physicians, allied professionals and other nurses in an environment where they can exchange ideas and increase their medical knowledge. Positions are offered as a Nursing Attendant, Nursing Companion or Summer Nurse Externship. All are part-time nursing positions for nursing students.

Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program offers work experience to nursing students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of nursing school. The externship is unpaid. Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) Externships offer veterinary students an opportunity to work in a veterinary environment for the study of birds, mammals and reptiles. The clinical externships are available at veterinary facilities across the country. Students accepted into the clinical externship program will have opportunities to learn about the care of many types of wild animals, including bald eagles, raptors, and other exotic wildlife and zoo animals. Externs will receive hands-on experience in clinical medicine and surgery, field observation, research, disease control, and other veterinary practices.

Penn State Hershey Student Nurse Externships are ten-week programs for nursing students entering their senior year. The externships give nursing students an opportunity to work directly with the nursing team at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. This paid externship is offered during the summer. Up to 35 qualified students will be hired. To qualify, students should have a grade point average of 3.0 or above and be in their senior year of nursing school. The externships are full-time and provide nursing experience in the areas of Patient Care Assistant and Patient Sitter.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Nursing Externships are paid work experience opportunities offered to nursing students at Jefferson University Hospital. Orientations are held every month.
