Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) offers an unpaid externship program for veterinary technology/nursing students, providing hands-on experience in emergency medicine. Students work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians (Veterinary Nurses), focusing on skills such as patient care, laboratory procedures, and triaging. Flexibility in externship length and location is provided, with mentorship and support from experienced staff. Requirements include enrollment in an AVMA accredited program, vaccination for rabies, and availability to start within six months.

It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. The externships give nursing students an opportunity to work directly with the nursing team at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. This paid externship is offered during the summer. Up to 35 qualified students will be hired. To qualify, students should have a grade point average of 3.0 or above and be in their senior year of nursing school.
