NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Externships are for nursing students currently enrolled in a BSN program. Externships give students a chance to increase their skill set and prepare for a career in nursing. Externs will work in one of the world’s largest academic medical centers. They will work with physicians, allied professionals and other nurses in an environment where they can exchange ideas and increase their medical knowledge. Positions are offered as a Nursing Attendant, Nursing Companion or Summer Nurse Externship. All are part-time nursing positions for nursing students.

UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program offers work experience to nursing students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of nursing school. The externship is unpaid. Externships are offered during the summer and take place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program is for nursing students who are just two semesters away from graduation. Senior-level nursing students may apply. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. The externship places nursing students in real work environments where they can apply their classroom learning in a hospital setting working with real patients.

Mayo Clinic Summer III Nursing Externship is open to nursing students every summer at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota. Students who are at the Junior level in school may apply. Externs work with clinical coaches as well as RNs in a variety of clinical settings, including working on trauma patients and performing CPR. Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

Johns Hopkins Clinical Nurse Externships are offered to nursing students who have completed at least one clinical practicum in an acute-care hospital. The externship includes pay and an opportunity to gain more hands-on experience in performing patient care duties. Applicants must be willing to work at least one shift a week during the school semester. To be eligible to apply, nursing students must have completed their nursing school course work as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing and obtain their CNA certification two weeks prior to the start of the externship.
