Geisinger Health System offers unpaid non-clinical externship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers within the health care industry. The externships are offered in many areas of study.

Externships give students an opportunity to observe and learn more about career occupations in the health care system. The positions are unpaid; students may receive college credit for completing externships. A grade point average of 2.5 or 3.0 is required, depending on the position. Each position will also have its own skills and course level requirements.

Some of the externship areas include marketing and public relations, nursing, health education, therapeutic recreation, communications, and other health and non-health related areas of study.

Geisinger Health System is located in Danville, Pennsylvania and provides health services to more than 2.6 million residents throughout 44 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. Externship are offered to undergraduate and graduate students as a learning experience to expose them to the many career opportunities available within the health care system.

Foreign Medical Graduate U.S. Externships

Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

Bain & Company offers students who have graduated from college a unique career in corporate strategy consulting. Students who join the Bain team are offered externship positions that allow them to jump start their career through six-month working assignments at other companies where they can pursue different career paths. As Associate Consultants and Senior Associate Consultants, team members have an opportunity to broaden their consulting knowledge at consumer product companies, international think tanks, nonprofit charter schools, startup companies, and others. Johns Hopkins Clinical Nurse Externships are offered to nursing students who have completed at least one clinical practicum in an acute-care hospital. The externship includes pay and an opportunity to gain more hands-on experience in performing patient care duties. Applicants must be willing to work at least one shift a week during the school semester. To be eligible to apply, nursing students must have completed their nursing school course work as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing and obtain their CNA certification two weeks prior to the start of the externship.
