Children's National Health System Externship Training Programs offer clinical externships for medical students in various areas of childhood treatment. Externship opportunities are available in autism, neuropsychology and psychology.

The externships are for students who are in their third year of medical school or beyond, who have completed their assessment coursework, and who have had prior externship experience with testing, and direct clinical experience with children. Externs will participate in doing testing, evaluating test results, forming diagnoses, and providing feedback to parents. The on-the-job training will prepare students for careers in autism, neuropsychology and psychology in treating children.

Externships last 12 months, and externs work 16 hours per week throughout the externship. To apply, applicants must submit a letter of interest for the specific externship and include two letters of recommendation and transcripts.

Children’s National Health System was founded in 1870 and is a leading clinical and research institution. It is the only provider of pediatric care located in the Washington, D.C. area.

Mayo Clinic Externships are available to current college students as well as recent graduates who want an opportunity to gain more experience in a health care environment. Externships are offered within several different disciplines. Whether students are looking for experience in the field of medicine, providing software and technology support, or developing health and other programs for the clinic, they are sure to find an experience that will enrich their classroom learning.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Externships are for nursing students currently enrolled in a BSN program. Externships give students a chance to increase their skill set and prepare for a career in nursing. Externs will work in one of the world’s largest academic medical centers. They will work with physicians, allied professionals and other nurses in an environment where they can exchange ideas and increase their medical knowledge. Positions are offered as a Nursing Attendant, Nursing Companion or Summer Nurse Externship. All are part-time nursing positions for nursing students.

As investors, venture capitalists (VCs) are investing in new ideas, innovations, and most importantly teams, where do they begin? This is called deal sourcing. Externs will profile startup companies, learn what VCs look for, and be a part of investing in the next generation of technology. HP Tech Ventures is seeking ambitious students to help research relevant pre-seed stage startups for deal sourcing and evaluation. This project includes special data analytics projects that allow students to practice using analysis tools to perform business model, strategy, and value chain analysis. Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

UCLA Health Nursing Summer Externship Program offers work experience to nursing students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of nursing school. The externship is unpaid. Externships are offered during the summer and take place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. Geisinger Health System offers unpaid non-clinical externship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers within the health care industry. The externships are offered in many areas of study. Externships give students an opportunity to observe and learn more about career occupations in the health care system. The positions are unpaid; students may receive college credit for completing externships. A grade point average of 2.5 or 3.0 is required, depending on the position. Each position will also have its own skills and course level requirements.

Christiana Care Health System Student Nurse Externships are offered to students enrolled in a nursing program and pursuing a career as a Registered Nurse. Students interested in applying must have completed at least one clinical rotation in an acute care setting. Student Nurse Externs work 16 hours bi-weekly and must also be available to work different shifts, holidays and weekends if necessary. The work environment is casual and the work schedules are flexible so students can continue uninterrupted with their studies.
