Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Externships are open to veterinary students pursuing careers in equine veterinary medicine. The program is primarily for third and fourth year veterinary students or graduate veterinarians, but other veterinary students may apply.

Externships are offered during the months of February through May and range from one week to one month in duration. Students will learn from experienced veterinarians and receive hands-on training in caring for some of the most valuable racing and breeding horses in the world.

Externships are sponsored by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. The institute was established in 1876 and provides state-of-the-art equine healthcare for horses around the world. Students interested in an externship experience at the institute may choose specialty areas such as field and herd veterinarian care, sport horse care, surgery, fertility, and others.

Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) U.S. Externships offer foreign medical students a hands-on clinical program that matches residency program requirements. It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.

The externship is unpaid. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester.
