Mercy Health Muskegon Externship offers an opportunity for medical students in their third or fourth year to gain clinical experience. Flexible schedules are available to meet the needs of medical students.

Externs will gain hands-on experience in many clinical areas. These include family and internal medicine, general and urological surgery, radiology, pathology, pediatrics, oncology, hematology, cardiology, anesthesiology, OB/GYN, and more.

Externs will work at the Muskegon, Michigan campus. They will be supervised and guided by attending physicians and participate in instructional sessions and educational programs. Meals and housing are provided.

Mercy Health consists of a group of hospitals, doctors and other health care providers serving patients throughout West Michigan. Their medical services include neurological, cardiovascular and cancer services. Mercy Health Muskegon has five main locations, including four hospitals located along the West Michigan Lakeshore.

It fills the experience requirement for students when they apply for a residency. The externship is different than just observing. Externships provide real, hands-on work experience for medical students. Externs will work with an attending physician and perform clinical duties such as assessing patient histories and performing physical examinations. All extern duties are done at a hospital under the supervision of a U.S. licensed attending physician.
