Bain & Company Externships

Bain & Company offers students who have graduated from college a unique career in corporate strategy consulting. Students who join the Bain team are offered externship positions that allow them to jump start their career through six-month working assignments at other companies where they can pursue different career paths. As Associate Consultants and Senior Associate Consultants, team members have an opportunity to broaden their consulting knowledge at consumer product companies, international think tanks, nonprofit charter schools, startup companies, and others. Following a six-month externship, consultants return to Bain with increased skills as a consultant and enhanced knowledge of other industries.

St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program

St. John Medical Center Nurse Externship Program is for nursing students who are just two semesters away from graduation. Senior-level nursing students may apply. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also be able to work the required number of hours during the semester. The externship places nursing students in real work environments where they can apply their classroom learning in a hospital setting working with real patients.

University of Maine School of Law Externships

University of Maine School of Law Externships are for second- and third-year law students at the University of Maine School of Law. Externships give students insight into various facets of actual law practice. Externships are unpaid but students may earn up to six credit hours for participation. Through placement within various legal settings, students may observe how law is practiced. This will help increase their skills and prepare them for a career in law. Students are mentored by experienced professionals who give them valuable feedback on their work. They also receive guidance from faculty members.

Cumberland School of Law Externships

Cumberland School of Law Externships offer law students an excellent opportunity to gain an inside view into the practice of law and earn college credit at the same time. Externships are unpaid and available to students in their second or third year of law school. As an extern, students will work with experienced attorneys outside the classroom in areas such as judges chambers, corporate legal departments, government agencies and non-profit organizations. Externships are offered during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

Bucknell University Externship Program

Bucknell University Externship Program offers short-term workplace experiences to Bucknell students in their sophomore year. The externships are unpaid and not for credit. Bucknell University's Career Development Center offers the two-day externships as a way for students to preview their careers early in college. This gives students more of an opportunity to define their career choices before declaring a major. The externships consist of placing students in hosting companies where they can shadow experienced professionals and gain a better understanding of what they do on a day-to-day basis.

SMU Dedman School of Law Externships

SMU Dedman School of Law Externships provide experience outside the classroom for law students currently attending the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas. Eligible students must have completed 30 hours of course work before applying and also be in good academic standing. The externships are unpaid; students may receive one credit for every 60 hours worked per semester. Although students may apply for more than one externship, they may only receive credit for one.

Emory University School of Law Externship Program

Emory University School of Law Externship Program gives students practical experience outside the classroom and a glimpse into the real world of law practice. It is open to second- and third-year law students. Eligible students accepted into the program work a total of 120 hours in a field placement and receive 3 hours of college credit; the externship is unpaid. Students may choose any one of over 80 positions available within corporations, the legal system, judges and non-profit organizations in the Atlanta area.

Kent College of Law Legal Externship Program

Kent College of Law students at the Illinois Institute of Technology can receive up to four hours of academic credit and great on-the-job experience by participating in the legal externship program. The externship program is unpaid but gives law students valuable insight into various areas of law practice. The program is 14 weeks long and is offered in the Fall and Summer. Applications are now being taken for the Fall program.

Santa Clara Law Externships

Law students at Santa Clara University School of Law have an opportunity to practice their trade while still in college through the Santa Clara Law Externships. Externships take classroom knowledge outside school and into the field where students can increase their learning. Students may choose field placements in several areas, including criminal law, domestic law, civil practice, and more. There is also the Panetta Fellowship program where students work in Monterey, California, at the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute. Here they will be exposed to law and government, political science, or public policy.

Golden Gate University Law Externship Clinics

Law students at Golden Gate University have a chance to see what it will be like to actually practice law by applying for a law externship clinic. Externships are available in the Fall, Spring and Summer. Law students may choose to work within government agencies, law offices, counsel offices, and judges' chambers. These externships give law students legal experience within the community. While working, students also receive college credit, ranging from 2-13 credits depending on the number of hours worked during the externship.

Veterinary Internships

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) provides an online resource for veterinary-related internships for students pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. The AMVA Veterinary Career Center posts openings daily for veterinary internship positions, as well as positions for associate veterinarians and full-time veterinarians across the country. Students interested in an internship position may search by zip code or key word to find an internship position in their location and field of interest.

University of Maryland School of Law Externship Program

Law students at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law have an opportunity to experience their career first-hand by participating in an externship. Students with an interest in governmental and not-for-profit organizations are encouraged to apply. Externships provide outside-the-classroom experience while earning college credit; a range of 3 - 11 credits are possible. The externship program provides field work experience along with a mandatory field-specific workshop that earns students 1 -2 college credit.

Gonzaga Law Externship Program

Students who have completed their first year of law school at Gonzaga University School of Law may apply for the Gonzaga Law Externship Program. The program gives law students practical experience external to the classroom. Externships are unpaid work-for-experience opportunities that allow law students to not only gain insight to the workings of the legal system but receive college credit at the same time. Students can earn up to 15 credits for their externship experience. The guideline is one credit hour for every 60 hours of work.

John C. Keeney Semester in Washington Program

Law students at Penn State School of Law can take their education outside the classroom by applying for the John C. Keeney Semester in Washington externship program. This program offers a work opportunity in Washington, D.C. for students in their third year of law school. Students selected for the externship will spend an entire semester in Washington, D.C. What does an externship provide? It gives real-life experience to students who want to practice in the area of federal law. Approved agencies include a federal government agency, nonprofit organization or public interest group.

Charleston School of Law Externship Program

The Charleston School of Law offers an opportunity for college law students to work in a legal setting and gain career experience outside the classroom. The externship program is designed for students to gain practical experience in a variety of legal professions and earn college credit at the same time. Students who have completed their first year of law school and are in good academic standing may apply. They begin by taking the Externship Course. They may then apply for an externship position. Students may work in a variety of positions throughout the community in a legal capacity. Examples include South Carolina Supreme Court, Charleston County Public Defender's Office, U.S. Attorney's Office, U.S. District Court, City of Charleston Housing Authority, and many more.

University of Virginia School of Law Externships

The University of Virginia School of Law offers part-time and full-time externship opportunities for students in their second or third year of law school. Externship positions are available at a government office or agency or a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization. Local, part-time externships are for students who can work 10 hours per week at a local organization. It also requires reading and writing assignments and gives students experience plus three academic credits. Full-time externships are also available and can be local, national or even international. Full-time externship students work 40 hours per week and receive 12 college credits.

MIT Student/Alumni Externship Program

College students enrolled at MIT have an opportunity to explore their career and gain experience in their field through the Student/Alumni Externship Program. Externship positions are available in several states and internationally. Every year during MIT's Independent Activities Period in January, students may apply for an externship at an alumni's place of business. The externship may last anywhere from one to four weeks. Over 300 undergraduate and graduate students participate in externships every year. The externships can take place at companies, start-ups, labs, and universities across the U.S. and international locations.

Boston College Externship Program

Students at Boston College have an opportunity to preview their career by applying for an externship position. The externship program is designed to give students a chance to spend time at an organization within their field of study. The externship program is generally a one-day experience but could be longer. Students may choose a company and apply for an externship through the college's Career Center. Once the organization and the student have been matched, students may contact the employer for more details on the position.

George Mason University School of Law Supervised Externship Program

Law students at George Mason University School of Law have many options when it comes to externships. The university's supervised externships give law students a chance to utilize their education by working for various organizations in a legal capacity. Students must have completed at least a third of their courses in law school before applying for an externship. The externship takes them outside the classroom and into real work settings, such as the Executive Office of the President, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Alexandria Commonwealth Attorney's Office, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Department of Justice.

AVMA Student Externship Stipend Program

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) offers externships for veterinary students who are interested in an opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real work setting. The externship pays students a stipend to help them with expenses. A total of 15 externships will be awarded. There are five opportunities available in animal veterinary services in the dairy, beef, swine and poultry industry. The other ten positions may include working for large organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, or National Institutes of Health. Other areas may include research or diagnostic labs, or companies that manufacture animal food.

Penn State Law’s International Justice Externship

Penn State Law’s International Justice Externship gives law students an international experience and an opportunity to gain professional experience in law within a global arena. Law students interested in international criminal law are encouraged to apply. The externship is offered in the Fall and Spring for law students at Penn State. Students accepted into the program will work directly with experienced prosecutors at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the Special Court for Sierra Leone, both located in The Hague, Netherlands.

Georgetown University Law Center Clinics

Georgetown University Law Center offers 15 different clinics each year to law students working on their J.D. The clinics give students an opportunity to prepare cases and represent real clients. Clinics combine classroom theory with actual legal practice. Law students will represent actual clients and be responsible for all the legal work performed, including research and investigation, case planning, client representation and pleading the client's case in court. Clinics cover several areas such as women's rights, domestic violence, juvenile justice, prisoner advocacy, federal legislation and more.

University of Pennsylvania Law School Externship Program

Students at the University of Pennsylvania Law School have an opportunity to gain real-life law experience and get college credit at the same time by applying for an externship program. The program assigns students to work in organizations and government offices to apply their classroom learning in the field of law. Externships are offered to second- and third-year law students at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Externships last one semester. Students may work at a government office, non-profit organization or legal firm. The program supplements classroom learning by giving students real experience in the field of law. The program is designed to help students advance their career goals and develop professional values that will prepare them for a career in law.

Villanova University School of Law Externship Program

Villanova University School of Law Externship Program offers externship opportunities for law students that allows them to experience the legal profession in a real world setting. Academic credit is available for the externship. The program includes over 30 approved externship field placements. Students participating in the program may work at law firms, government agencies, or non-profit organizations. Their work will be supervised by a practicing lawyer at the participating organization and a faculty advisor from the school of law.

University of California at Berkeley Externship Program

An externship program offers students at the University of California a chance to shadow a professional in their field of study and test drive their career. They are short in duration and give students an inside view of their career field. Freshman and sophomores at the University of California may apply for externships. Most of the externships are in northern and southern California. There are also some located in New York, Washington D.C. and overseas. They take place during the winter break. Students may apply for up to three externships. If chosen, they must commit to fulfilling the schedule, which generally lasts two weeks.

Children's National Medical Center Externship Program

Children's National Medical Center offers externship training programs for medical students that includes the areas of autism, psychology, and neuropsychology. The externships generally are one year in length. Clinical Externships in Autism Evaluation, Consultation and Treatment are available for students studying psychology with a strong interest in working with children. The externship is held at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders and offers students training in evaluation, consultation and treatment of autism and related disorders in toddlers, children and adolescents.

Georgetown Law Externships

Externships are a great way for law students at Georgetown University to experience working in law within the public sector. Training external to the classroom is available through the unpaid externship program that allows students to work in various work environments. Students accepted into the externship program may choose to work for the federal government, on the Hill, in judicial chambers, or in local or national non-profit agencies. Students must have completed one year of coursework before applying. They must also complete the course requirements in order to be eligible to participate in the program.

Virginia Tech Externships

Students attending Virginia Tech have an opportunity to experience their career choice through the Virginia Tech Externship Program. Students can major in any academic field and qualify for an externship position. The externships are unpaid and give students a chance to clarify their career goals, work with professionals in their field, ask questions and learn more about their profession. Students have a choice of working during the summer at a workplace close to their home, during school breaks, during the summer or during semesters at school.

Catholic University of America Legal Externship Program

Catholic University of America (CUA)Externships are offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer for students at the Catholic University of America who have completed their first year of law school. The externship is a combination of coursework and classes along with an assignment working with a legal firm, government agency or non-profit organization. Each year, the CUA Legal Externship Program places over 200 students in externship positions with non-profit organizations, government agencies, congressional offices, judges, law firms, trade associations and corporations. Law students are able to use their knowledge in a workplace setting and explore their career opportunities. Interns work with lawyers and are also assigned a mentor who will review the student’s progress throughout the externship.

Washington College of Law Externship Program

The American University Washington College of Law offers externship programs for students currently pursuing a degree in law at the university. Externships allow students to pursue career options and areas where they might want to practice law. Externships may be with federal/state/local government agencies or courts. They may also be with non-profit organizations or law firms. All externships receive mentoring by an experienced attorney and are given work projects that reflect real-life experience practicing law.
