Respiratory Externship Program

Respiratory Externship Program is open to students currently enrolled in an accredited program and working towards a degree in professional respiratory care. The externship program provides students with skills, knowledge and experience in pediatric respiratory care. The externship program requires students to have a grade point average of 3.4 or above and be in their junior year of college. The extern program also requires students to work one clinical shift a week after they have completed the didactic portion of their respiratory program.

Nurse Extern Program

Nurse Extern Program offers a paid externship for nursing students who are in their final year of nursing school. The externship gives nursing students an opportunity to receive hands-on experience within the nursing field while still in school. Nursing students will be able to work at one of Pinnacle Health centers while attending school. The schedules for externs are flexible and allow for rotating shifts to accommodate the study schedules of nursing students.

Geisinger Health System Externship Opportunities

Geisinger Health System offers unpaid non-clinical externship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers within the health care industry. The externships are offered in many areas of study. Externships give students an opportunity to observe and learn more about career occupations in the health care system. The positions are unpaid; students may receive college credit for completing externships. A grade point average of 2.5 or 3.0 is required, depending on the position. Each position will also have its own skills and course level requirements.

Saint Louis Zoo Externships

Saint Louis Zoo Externships are offered in the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall to students who are either currently enrolled in college or have had previous college coursework. Students studying in the areas of biology, zoology, education, animal science or related fields are encouraged to apply. The externships are unpaid and last about 6 weeks or more. Externs will have the opportunity to learn how the zoo operates and receive hands-on experience in the care of zoo animals. Externs work about 15 hours per week and must be at least 18 years old to apply.

The Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services Externships

The Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (JBFCS) Externships are offered to graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in clinical and school psychology. Students must be enrolled in a APA approved program in clinical psychology. Eligible students must be in their third or fourth year of graduate study to apply. They are also required to have completed at least one externship before applying for the JBFCS externship. Required coursework that must be completed before applying includes cognitive and projective testing.

The Florida Aquarium Veterinary Externship

The Florida Aquarium Veterinary Externship is open to veterinary students in their fourth year of school. Students may apply during their junior or third year of veterinary school.  Externs will gain valuable hands-on experience in exotic animal and aquatic medicine. The externship lasts 4-8 weeks and includes observing and assisting with medical procedures on fish, birds, otters, penguins, sea turtles, and other reptiles.

U.S. Department of Labor Civil Rights Center Externship Opportunities

This externship is an unpaid work experience for law students who want to ensure equal opportunity for others. Externs will work with the Civil Rights Center to provide nondiscriminatory opportunities for current employees as well as those who apply for positions with the U.S. Department of Labor. This is a paid externship for health profession students. Externs will receive experience in treating exotic animals, emergency care, surgery, cardiology, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, and more. Externs work with senior veterinarians and are also able to participate in clinics and observe emergency room treatment of animals.

Bain Externships are offered to consultants currently working at Bain & Company, a managing consultant services company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The externship offers consultants an opportunity to work for another company for six months to gain more experience. The program is offered to help Bain consultants strengthen their skills and increase their knowledge about the way other companies do business. Consultants work for a company of their choice, and then return to Bain. Company choices include consumer product companies, international think tanks, nonprofits, startup companies, and many more.

The American Veterinary Medical Association Headquarters Externship

The American Veterinary Medical Association Headquarters Externship is open to all veterinary medicine students who are members of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA). The paid externship program lasts 3-4 weeks and takes place at AVMA headquarters. The externship gives students a chance to explore veterinary career opportunities in clinical practice, teaching, research or working within a large corporation. Each year, five students are selected for this program at AVMA headquarters. The externship gives students a choice to spend the entire externship in one division or among several divisions.

This work experience is available to students attending Southern Illinois University. The externships match students with positions within their chosen careers at locations throughout the U.S. Available positions are the result of alumni and friends of SIU at participating companies. Some of the companies offering externships include Major League Soccer, Wal-Mart, Kemper CPA Group, Illinois State Museum, Boeing, Chrysler, PepsiCo, and many others.

Inova Trauma Externship Program is designed for college students who are studying medicine and pursuing careers in trauma care. Students who are interested in healthcare and careers in medicine, nursing and other healthcare professions may apply. The program gives students a real-life view into what happens in trauma care. This is an unpaid externship that lasts two weeks. During this time, externs will observe professionals at work in trauma care and gain an in-depth view into a career as a trauma care service provider. Healthcare students will find this externship an enriching experience as they join trauma surgeons on their daily rounds, assess patients and provide emergency resuscitation and surgical procedures.

York Technical College Summer Externship for Educators

York Technical College Summer Externship for Educators is a unique externship for teachers only. The externship is offered every summer for educators to help them stay current with career opportunities for students. The externship is offered by York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Educators who are accepted into the program spend ten days with a local employer and take that experience back to the classroom. This enables students to learn what careers are available, and how much education and training they will need to enter that career field.

William Mitchell Externships

William Mitchell Externships are designed to help law students gain valuable experience in their field. After completing required courses, students are placed in the field to learn about the practice of law. Externs receive hands-on learning experience under the supervision of both a faculty member as well as the field supervisor. Externships include Independent Externships and Independent Judicial Externships. The externships are for college credit. Classroom-based externships are also offered that include classes on analytical topics of the law. Classroom externships are supervised by a professor.

Students attending the Star Career Academy are required to complete an externship before graduating. They may choose from many exciting venues such as restaurants, catering services, hotels, corporate dining rooms, country clubs, bake shops, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and conference centers.

Fried Frank Externships

Fried Frank Externships are designed to give work experience to mid-level, third-year, or recent law school graduates. The externships give law students practice in litigation as well as experience in public service. Externs may work on behalf of the NAACP for the defense of African-Americans and other minority groups. They may provide litigation services for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund on behalf of Latinos.

SeaWorld Parks Externships

University of Southern California Gould School of Law Externships offer law students at USC an opportunity to gain practical experience in the law as part of the Externship Practicum. The externship is offered during summer and during other semesters. Students may extern at a local entertainment or media firm such as Fox, MGM, Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Universal Music, and television networks like NBC and MTV. Externs work with other attorneys in legal departments negotiating talent agreements, writing license agreements, or assisting with other legal matters pertaining to the entertainment business.

Mann Child Policy Externships

The externship places students with public and non-profit community organizations whose programs help children. The externship is unpaid but offers 3-6 hours of college course credit. Students eligible for the program include college sophomores, juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 3.2 overall and 3.4 in their major. Students must also have completed at least two social science classes that focus on children or families.

University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Externships

University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Externships are offered to veterinary students from all schools. The externships are for students who are in their final year of veterinary school. Externships are available in the Fall and Summer and are structured as two 2-week assignments. This externship gives veterinary students an opportunity to do more than just observe; externs will receive hands-on experience in providing veterinary treatment. Externships also offer college credit for completion of the program.

U.S. Department of the Interior Legal Externship Program

U.S. Department of the Interior Legal Externship Program offers law school students an opportunity to receive practical experience in the field of law while continuing their education. Programs are offered in the Spring, Summer and Fall. Externs may participate in civil litigation, conduct legal research, assist the Justice Department with legal work, draft legal briefs and motions, and assist with federal legal cases. Applicants must be currently attending a U.S. accredited law school, be in good standing, and have excellent legal research and writing skills.

American Association of Feline Practitioners Externships

American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Externships are available for veterinary students who want to focus their interest on feline medicine. The organization helps students locate externships throughout the U.S. Externships offer short work experiences in a veterinary setting for students who are currently attending veterinary medical school. Students may also find either part-time or full-time work in feline medical centers, feline veterinary offices and hospitals that will give them more experience in their field.

Cornell Extern Program

Cornell Extern Program is open to college sophomores, juniors, and seniors from all undergraduate colleges. It's an opportunity for students to explore their career options while still in college. Winter externships are offered during January and February. Externships can last from one day to one week. Eligible students will find externships available in numerous career fields and geographic locations around the world. The externships do no include pay or college credit. Students will be responsible for all expenses, including travel and housing.

The Academy of Rural Veterinarians Externships

The Academy of Rural Veterinarians (ARV) Externships are open to all veterinary students interested in working in a rural community. Applicants can be first-year students up to senior-year level. The externship pays a weekly stipend to provide financial assistance for veterinary students who are willing and interested in working in a rural practice externship. The sponsoring practice must be located in an area where agriculture is a major contributor to the economy. The practice must also have one ARV member. In addition, the practice must include services to multiple species.

St. Jude’s Nurse Extern Program

St. Jude’s Nurse Extern Program is designed to give nursing students work experience in pediatric oncology nursing. Nursing school students who are within 12 months of graduation may apply. The length of the externship varies. Students who are entering their senior year of nursing school may apply. The internship is paid; housing is not included. Applications are available every year in the months of March, April, October and November.

University of Michigan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship

University of Michigan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship is offered to dental students who are pursuing careers in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The externship will expose students to various career options in the dentistry field. Students applying for the program must be in good academic standing. They must also have completed courses that have taught them basic oral and maxillofacial surgery. They must know how to administer local anesthesia and perform dental surgery of the teeth, soft tissue, and the jawbone, such as teeth extraction.

Association of Avian Veterinarians Externships

Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) Externships offer veterinary students an opportunity to work in a veterinary environment for the study of birds, mammals and reptiles. The clinical externships are available at veterinary facilities across the country. Students accepted into the clinical externship program will have opportunities to learn about the care of many types of wild animals, including bald eagles, raptors, and other exotic wildlife and zoo animals. Externs will receive hands-on experience in clinical medicine and surgery, field observation, research, disease control, and other veterinary practices.

The externships are available to both veterinary and veterinary technician students. Externships allow students to engage in their profession for a short time to learn what skills they need to develop to prepare for a career in veterinary medicine. Positions are available across the country. Externships can include small animals, felines, canines, emergency and trauma care, general practice, and much more.

Banfield Pet Hospital Externships

Banfield Pet Hospital Externships provide work opportunities for veterinary medicine students in a clinical setting. Students in their first to third years in veterinary school may apply. Veterinary students will receive hands-on experience as well skill building. Externs will spend about 80 percent of their time on a veterinary team of assistants, and the other 20 percent working directly with their mentor. Each extern will have a veterinary doctor as their guide throughout the externship.

American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Externships

American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Externships are designed to provide a 2-3 week work experience in laboratory animal medicine for veterinary medicine students. The externships are offered at several different host locations. Students may choose an externship at a university such as Johns Hopkins or Ohio State University, or they can complete their externship at a medical facility such as Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Each externship will provide a placement that will match students' interests and career goals.

University of Notre Dame Lawyering Practice Externship

University of Notre Dame Lawyering Practice Externship gives law students a chance to practice their legal skills while still in college. By spending a few hours a week in a legal setting, students can gain experience as well as college credit. Externs work an average of 8-10 hours a week. Placements can be in courts, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, or in-house corporate counsel offices. Experience will vary by position but all externs will have an opportunity to practice an area of law that meets their career goals and expectations.

Duquesne University School of Law Externships

Duquesne University School of Law Externships are designed to give law students an opportunity to experience law practice while still in school. Second and third-year law students may apply. Students must have a grade point average of 2.0 or above to be eligible. Students receive three hours of college credit for completing the externship. During the 14-week externship, students work an average of 10 hours per week at the sponsoring company.

American College of Veterinary Pathologists Externships

American College of Veterinary Pathologists Externships are open to students studying veterinary medicine and interested in a career in veterinary pathology. Externships are anywhere from two weeks to three months and include scholarship money to help defray costs. Students must have completed their core courses before applying; first and second year students will be considered if they have participated in extracurricular activities related to veterinary pathology.

The University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Washington, D.C. Externship Program offers law students a semester-long externship in Washington, D.C. It is an opportunity for law students to receive legal training and college credit at the same time. Students at the University of San Diego School of Law may choose to work for an attorney, a government or public interest agency, non-profit trade association, or with a judge. The work experience will teach them various aspects of the law at work in real settings. Students must be in their second or third year of law school in order to apply.

Veterinary Centers of America Animal Hospital Externships

Veterinary Centers of America Animal Hospital (VCA) Externships are available to 3rd or 4th year veterinary medicine students currently enrolled in a DVM or VMD program at an AVMA accredited college or university. The program offers externships at over 600 animal hospitals in 41 states, including three Canadian provinces. The externships are for experience, offering college students a variety of veterinary settings that will fit their particular career interest. Not only will students be able to work with experienced veterinarians but also talk to students who may be doing their residency at the hospital.

West Virginia University Public Service Externship

West Virginia University Public Service Externship offers a part-time skills building opportunity for law students at West Virginia University. Students who register for the externship will receive college credit and professional work experience. Interested students begin by registering for Law 653, the required Public Service Externship course, and Law 654. The courses will prepare students to work in an approved externship placement which may be in a government office or a non-profit organization. Students may earn a total of 3-5 credits for completing the externship.

Cornell University Externship Program

Externships offer experiential work shadowing opportunities in a wide variety of career fields. The externship allows students to visit Cornell alumni in their work environments, and they can last anywhere from one day to one week. This allows students to observe a particular career field in order to better define their career choices. Sophomores, juniors and seniors from all undergraduate colleges may apply for an externship at Cornell.

University of California Irvine School of Law Externships

University of California Irvine School of Law Externships offer law students the opportunity to practice their skills in a real work environment. Externs provide legal services to the community and gain experience at the same time in the field of law. Law students interested in working as an extern may choose positions within judges' courts, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. The externship program is designed to include both on-site work opportunities and classroom teachings in various areas of the law. In addition to valuable experience gained by working with other experienced professionals, students will receive academic credit for an externship.

United States District Court for the Central District of California Externship

American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Student Externship Stipend Program

American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Student Externship Stipend Program provides work experience for veterinary students along with a stipend. The externship program gives students an opportunity to use their classroom knowledge in the field while finishing their degree. This externship focuses on providing veterinary services in under-served areas. Externs will work within the dairy, beef, swine and poultry areas or other food supply veterinary practice settings. A stipend is included to help students defray any externship expenses.
